September 2008

We are delighted that Fiona Bird from Stirrin Stuff will be with us at the September Perth Farmers' Market.

Stirrin' Stuff works in partnership with schools and nursery schools as well as at food events throughout the UK . Fiona will be at the market from 9am until midday and will be working with three groups of local children in the preparation and cooking of produce from the market. The emphasis is on fun but through that comes learning: where the food comes from, how it is grown, how to cook it and of course, how to enjoy eating it.

Perth Farmers' Market will also be visited by a group of London based food writers who are staying in Perth for the weekend to learn about local produce.

As well as a visit to the market the writers will enjoy a number of site visits including the Carse of Gowrie Orchards, Atholl Glens and Stewart Tower Dairy. They will be dining out in local restaurants and will end their trip on Sunday evening with a Whisky Dinner at Scone Palace .

NEW STALLHOLDER Blair Atholl Watermill will be joining us at the September market and will be selling a range of bread products, cakes and traybakes.

The watermill is one of the last eleven working watermills still operational in Scotland and was kept working until 1929 when it ceased production mainly because the traditional mills could not compete with the new industrial mills which were being built. The mill was then used as a store until 1977 when restoration work was begun by John Ridley with the help of the last miller's assistant who could still remember the old mill. John Ridley retired in 1993 and it then passed to James and Mary Bruce, parents of the current owner.

The wheat and oats are stoneground in the traditional manner. This helps retain the nutritional benefits of the grain as well as giving the produce a delicious nutty flavour. The watermill produces pinhead, coarse, medium and fine oatmeal and coarse wholemeal, wholemeal and bread flour. The flour and oatmeal are used in their home baking.
